Half-marathon training – Week 9 – Half way there

Even though my training in week 9 was exactly the same as in week 8 (17.5m plus some swimming) there were still two important events of note:

  1. I can run slow! I ran my 6m Sunday “long run” at a just below a 12 min/mile pace. This felt very slow but all the running books I’ve been reading say that the best way to build endurance is to run slow.
  2. The end of week 9 marked the mid point in my training schedule. So week-wise I’m half way there!

Lots of fruits and veggies are coming my way

A year and a half ago I thought about joining a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. I recently revisited this idea and decided to jump in and sign up with Full Circle Farm.

Starting March 30 I’ll be getting a box of fresh of organic produce every second week. The box size I’ve signed up for is supposed to be enough produce for two adults for a week so I figure it should work for one adult for two weeks. I’m just going to have to be smart about eating the more perishable things first. The program seems very organized and has a pretty good web interface. You can trade up to three items in your box each week and alter your delivery schedule. The flexible schedule was a 100% requirement for me since I’m going to be traveling a lot this spring and summer (my father has dubbed it “three weddings and a cruise”).

I’m most looking forward to getting produce I wouldn’t usually purchase myself. Plus I feel good about the fact that I’ll be eating local in season produce as opposed to stuff that has flown thousands of kilometers to get to my grocery store.

Olympic reflections

My first post-Olympics observation is that it’s a lot harder to drag myself out of bed at 6:30 am to go for a run without the knowledge that I’ll be able to watch the Olympics when I get back.

I thouroughly enjoyed watching these Olympics and was thrilled with the Canadian performance. 24 medals! We rock! Unfortunately Canada came up one medal short of the US which means all the smack I talked to my roommate wasn’t really justified. Hey they have nine times the population. So there.

The countdown to Vancouver 2010 is officially on. Only 1443 days to go!
