The quest for the perfect date square
I love date squares. They’re right up there with chocolate on my list of favourite treats. Unfortunately date squares are not commercially available in Seattle – I’ve never seen them for sale in any grocery store or coffee shop. So last summer I decided that I would try to bake the perfect date square myself. I tried my grandmother’s recipe as well as two or three recipes off the web but I was never able to achieve what I imagine to be the perfect date square. This weekend I relaunched the quest and made a batch using a recipe from the Vive le Vegan cookbook which I had checked out of the library. These are tasty but once again not as perfect as I imagine a date square could be. I’m starting to worry that my idea of perfection too closely resembles the mass produced M&M version!
So if anyone has a good recipe please past it on! I’m going to continue on my quest and I’m more than willing to eat the almost perfect batches!
