Another way to get my weekly fresh, local, organic produce fix
I get a “small” box from my CSA (usually) every second week. It’s supposed to contain enough produce to feed two adults for one week. If I plan well and pick my meals wisely I can actually eat all the produce myself in one week. Most of the time it takes me 1.5 weeks and I supplement with produce from the grocery store to complete dishes and tide me over until my next box arrives. This system works fine but there has been an exciting new development…
Wallingford has a new Farmer’s Market!
In light of this my new plan is to go to the farmer’s market on the weeks I don’t get a CSA box. That way I can still get a weekly fresh, local, organic produce fix. I’ll still need to go to the grocery store to get bananas (a totally non-local fruit I can’t live without) and non-produce items but that will probably be about it.
I went to the farmer’s market yesterday for the first time to check things out. I restrained myself from pruchasing too much since I had a CSA box arriving today (see photo below). I only bought some local strawberries (delicous!), snap peas and a basil plant. I’ve been wanting to try and grow my own basil for a while. It’s one of my favourite herbs. Now I need to get some potting soil and a pot and transplant my little guy. Realistically I don’t think it will survive the winter in my apartment (we don’t keep the heat high enough) but it will be fun to have it around for now. In a display of a total lack of creativity I’ve named my plant Basil (pronunced BAH’zil as opposed to BAY’zil).

My Best Friend’s Wedding
Last Friday my best friend Angie got married. Angie and I met 15 years ago in grade 9 gym class. I made her try out for the basketball team in grade 10 and we’ve been best friends ever since. Even so I was very honoured when Angie asked me to be her Maid of Honour. I have to say Angie was the ideal bride; through all the wedding planning she never even came close to a Bridezilla! In fact I think she and Reg were the calmest people at the rehersal the night before the wedding! We were a little concerned that rain might ruin the plans for an outdoor wedding but thankfully it held off and all we had was 20 minutes of very hard rain while all the guests were in the tent before the reception. Here’s a picture of Angie and Reg about to say their vows and one of them signing the wedding registry.

Getting bridesmaid dresses was a bit of a drama. I ended up ordering five different dresses in three different styles! The one that I did keep needed alterations but in the end, as you can see from the photo below, it all worked out and the bridesmaids looked fantastic. The most amazing thing is that the dresses all fell at then same height even though we’re all different heights! It couldn’t have been better even if we’d tried to coordinate it!

Matt and my parents also attended the wedding. In fact all these photos were taken by my mother. Well all but the photo below that she’s in!

8K training – Week 6 – Running on Canada Day
Last week I was in Ottawa for my best friend’s wedding (more on that in an upcoming post). I was a little worried that with the wedding and its associated distractions I wouldn’t be able to stick with my training schedule. However I managed to shift things a bit and complete the week. It helped that my parents have a treadmill in the basement so I could knock off short runs independent of the weather. The crowning achievement of the week was a hot hot hot noontime 9 miler on Canada Day in Ottawa. There was no way I was doing 9 miles on the treadmill (that’s just asking for shin splints) so I picked a beautiful route along the canal and through the experimental farm. I felt strong during the run but the last two miles were a bit though; that’s probably because I’m not used to the Ontario heat and humidity. Still, there’s nothing like Ottawa on Canada Day.
So for the record my total week 6 mileage was 20 miles (3+5+3+9).
